New home not yet handed over, old home must be vacated: How to arrange for furniture during the transition?

Moving out and moving in dates don't align? Use a three-stage timeline to arrange temporary storage, temporary living supplies, and delivery to the new home, leaving room for delays.

Short answer

Facing a gap between vacating and taking possession, divide items into three groups: daily essentials, items for temporary storage, and items to discard, then arrange collection from the old location, temporary storage, and delivery to the new location separately. Do not lock in a move-out date before confirming the new home is move-in ready; check ongoing storage, rescheduling, two-stage moving, and new building delivery restrictions together to avoid calculating for only one trip.

Key summary

  • Keep documents, medicines, work tools, and transitional clothing with you.
  • Confirm the move-out date, storage start date, and redelivery date separately.
  • Compare costs for the entire transition period, not just monthly rent.
  • If handover is delayed, confirm extended storage early; do not wait until the original delivery date to change it.

1. Map out three dates; don't just ask when you are moving

The first is the move-out date when the old home must be cleared, the second is the date the new home can actually accept items, and the third is the date you plan to formally move in. Receiving keys does not necessarily mean inspection, renovation, or cleaning is complete; there could be a gap of several weeks.

Clearly label confirmed and estimated dates, and add time slots when the management office allows service lifts and loading/unloading. Provide both addresses and contact methods during the transition period when enquiring so that collection and redelivery can be assessed separately.

  • Old home: Final moving slot and cleaning time before move-out
  • New home: Handover, inspection, work, and cleaning progress
  • Temporary residence: Luggage capacity, allowed items, and duration of stay

2. Separate temporary items from the main bulk of furniture

Prepare a set of daily supplies to cover the entire transition; don't just pack for one night. Documents, regular medication, computers, chargers, and important files should remain with you; list items for children's school needs, elderly care, or pets separately.

Record other items by box number and label boxes to be retrieved early. If only retrieving a few boxes, do not mix them with dismantled furniture parts; ask in advance if partial arrangements are feasible and how much notice time is required.

3. New home not yet decided: Confirm if furniture is worth continuing to store

Large sofas, bed frames, and wardrobes should be measured for outer dimensions and dismantled dimensions, then compared against the new home's entrance, hallways, and intended placement. Fitting in the old home does not mean it can pass through the new building's service lift or corners; assess if it can be reassembled based on structure and condition.

Put moving, packing, dismantling/reassembling, and storage period costs on the same table, then compare with the retention value. Items you have decided not to keep should have separate arrangements for legal disposal; do not assume the storage or moving team will handle it for you.

4. Back-up arrangements for handover delays should be written down early

For example, if temporary storage was expected for three weeks, and later an inspection requires another repair, contact customer service to confirm if you can extend, how the next rental period is calculated, and whether the original transport date needs to be changed. This is a planning scenario, not a commitment that all plans can be calculated daily.

Retain quotes, item lists, and rescheduling records, and update confirmed dates each time. If the storage plan and accommodation arrangement end at the same time, ensure you and your essentials have a place to stay first before deciding on the delivery time for large quantities, to avoid items arriving at a unit not yet ready.

5. Before redelivery to the new home, check receipt conditions again

The new building management office may have moving applications, vehicle access, designated routes, or service lift protection requirements; check directly with the management office. It is easy to miss items if you estimate new transport costs based on old address conditions; if lift, parking, or floor information changes, inform us.

Complete necessary cleaning before redelivery, arrange for someone to receive the items, and decide where large items will be placed. Check items one by one according to box number and condition; dismantled parts, screw packs, and accessories should be checked with the main unit; record discrepancies immediately, don't wait until all boxes are unpacked to trace them.

6. Use the same information for enquiries, separating the two journeys and storage

A clear enquiry should state: old address, new address (or 'to be confirmed'), item list and photos, expected storage duration, and which boxes might be needed early. New address details not yet known can be supplemented later, but check if the quote still applies.

Please list items for old address collection, storage, delivery to the new address, and other tasks separately, and ask about cancellation, rescheduling, and extension arrangements. Do not interpret 'Moving with Storage' as including all addresses, floors, and dates, nor treat a starting price as an all-inclusive price.

FAQs

Can I arrange storage if there is no definite handover date for the new home?
You can provide the old home handover date, items, and expected storage duration for enquiry, but label the redelivery date as 'to be confirmed'. Rental periods, extensions, transport dates, and change fees must be confirmed according to the selected plan; do not assume indefinite extensions are possible.
Only a few days until move-in, do I definitely not need to store?
Not necessarily. Compare how much can be kept in temporary accommodation, whether furniture can be safely stored temporarily, and if moving on both ends can be coordinated. Short gaps may still involve two-stage moving and minimum rental periods; decide based on total cost and feasibility.
Can I send some items to temporary accommodation and store the rest?
You can propose diversion addresses, quantities, and dates when enquiring for customer service to confirm availability and itemised quotes. An additional address or extra transport trip is not included in the original fee.
