A guide to the schedule before and after renovation, item sorting, and temporary storage arrangements.
Short answer
For renovation storage, first confirm processes and clearance dates. Categorise items into 'essentials', 'temporary storage', and 'discard', then arrange transport and packaging based on furniture dimensions. Schedule return delivery in line with project handover, cleaning, and actual home conditions; don't rely solely on the initial completion date. Confirm extension and storage renewal in advance.
Key summary
- Schedule clearance and return dates separately.
- Keep daily essentials separate; don't pack everything in the house at once.
- If the project is delayed, confirm the storage renewal and return schedule simultaneously.
1. Plan two weeks in advance
Confirm the schedule with your renovation contractor and reserve dates for moving items into storage and returning them.
2. Sort: Store, Take, Discard
Renovation is a great time to declutter; decide what to store, what to keep with you, and what can be disposed of.
3. Return arrangements
Schedule a bulk return after the work is finished and allow time to clean the new space.
4. Four categories of items before renovation clearance.
First, divide items into: 'keep with you', 'temporary storage', 'discard', and 'special handling'. Pack documents, medicine, computers, and clothes for temporary housing separately; do not store these with long-term furniture.
Fridges, washing machines, and equipment requiring connections should be disconnected, cleaned, and drained according to product guides and project schedules; document glass, stone surfaces, and non-detachable furniture with photos. Disconnection and reconnection are not always included in general transport services.
5. How to avoid transport and renovation schedules clashing?
Confirm the order of clearance, scaffolding, demolition, and major material delivery with the contractor before scheduling item removal. Building management may require booking the service lift, protecting common areas, or restricting transport hours, which must be handled separately.
Do not schedule the transport vehicle to arrive after demolition work begins, and do not assume the door-to-door team can wait for site clearance. If the home is still occupied, mark out a safe path to prevent furniture, packaging, and tools from blocking the entrance.
6. Furniture packaging, records, and partial retrieval.
Note down item names, dimensions, existing scratches, and parts one by one; take photos of the assembled state before dismantling. Label screw bags with the corresponding furniture, store glass or removable parts separately, and determine packaging methods based on materials and transport needs.
If you might need to retrieve an office chair or a box of winter clothes mid-storage, mark it before moving into storage. Partial retrieval may involve rescheduling and additional fees; don't assume a full-batch return arrangement means any box or item can be delivered for free at any time.
7. Completion doesn't mean it's suitable for return on the same day.
Before return delivery, check that door access, flooring, wall finishes, and utility work are complete, and clear out construction waste and dust. Handle ventilation, drying, and move-in requirements following product instructions and contractor advice; there is no fixed waiting period suitable for all renovations.
If you need an extension, contact customer service to confirm storage renewal, billing, and whether the original return appointment can be changed. Check items by room and item number upon return; placing large furniture first before unpacking boxes reduces the chance of repeated moving and scratching new floors.
FAQs
- Do I still need full-house storage for a one-room renovation?
- Not necessarily. First confirm the construction area, dust, and worker access, then decide on partial shifting or off-site storage. Only items that cannot be safely protected, interfere with work, or block access should be considered for separate temporary storage.
- If renovation is delayed, can items continue to be stored?
- Storage renewal periods, costs, and return schedules must be confirmed according to your original service and availability; request this before the scheduled retrieval, and do not assume you can indefinitely extend at the original price.
- Can I use plastic film to store a mattress for a long time?
- First ensure the mattress is completely dry; packaging must address both anti-stain and moisture issues. Never seal a mattress that isn't fully dry. Handle special materials according to the manufacturer's instructions.
