Short-term storage isn't just about the monthly rent: account for the entire requirement, including items, minimum rental periods, two-way transport, and extension arrangements.
Short answer
For one to three months of temporary storage, first segment by small items in boxes or large furniture, then compare total costs for the applicable rental period, pickup, delivery, and retrieval. Central Warehouse has a minimum rental period of one month; Door-to-door Box Storage has existing three and six-month plans, and their terms cannot be mixed. Storing for a few weeks does not mean you can pay daily; assess whether short-term rental is suitable by factoring in transport and potential extensions.
Key summary
- Provide the actual start date and estimated retrieval date first.
- Distinguish between monthly starting prices, total plan prices, and one-off fees.
- Also confirm retrieval methods and notification time for short-term storage.
- Set aside options for rescheduling and renewal; do not assume the rental period can be shortened arbitrarily.
1. Confirm the true reason for the short-term storage and exit conditions first.
Renovation completion, handover for keys, or school summer holidays all have different uncertainties. Instead of just saying 'storing for a while', explain the reason, the earliest possible retrieval date, and potential extensions so customer service can suggest appropriate services.
If the end date depends on construction or property handover, mark the retrieval date as tentative and clarify how renewals are calculated. Short-term needs do not mean the service provider can waive minimum rental periods, nor does it mean all unused days will be refunded proportionally upon early retrieval.
2. Box small items; assess dimensions and transport for large items first.
Organise clothing, books, and small personal items into boxes; measure and photograph sofas, mattresses, wardrobes, or home appliances. Do not force items that do not fit into a specific box type just for a lower price, or concentrate all heavy books in one box.
When choosing Door-to-door Box Storage, Door-to-door Storage, or Central Warehouse, compare the service models, not just the names. The minimum rental period for Central Warehouse cannot be directly applied to box plans; similarly, free transport for box plans cannot be automatically applied to other services.
3. Write the total cost as a single calculation.
Use 'storage fee for the applicable rental period + pickup and delivery fees + confirmed packing, disassembly, or moving surcharges' as the basic comparison, then add estimated additional retrieval or extension needs. Items for which you are unsure if charges will apply should be marked as 'to be confirmed' rather than self-filling as zero.
For example, for three weeks of temporary storage, one plan might be calculated based on the minimum rental period, while another is charged by a specific plan. This scenario is not a price commitment; you must specify the billing unit of the actual quote to avoid estimating the short-term total using long-term starting prices.
4. Retrieval frequency is sometimes more important than the number of storage days.
If you only store once at the start and collect everything at the end, you can centralise two delivery/pickup appointments. If you need to retrieve documents or inventory every week, compare notification times, per-visit fees, and pickup/delivery methods to avoid multiple arrangements for a small number of items.
The current arrangement for mid-storage retrieval from the Central Warehouse is HK$300 per visit; this does not mean door-to-door delivery is included, nor does it mean other services charge the same. Frequent retrievers should inform customer service of estimated visits and quantities to assess suitability.
5. Packing and moving time cannot be completely omitted.
Short-term storage still requires cleaning, drying, protecting fragile items, and recording box numbers. Simply packing items in trash bags will make counting and partial retrieval difficult; confirm disassembly scope and access conditions for large items beforehand—do not decide on moving day.
Reserve time slots for collection from the old premises and delivery to the new one, especially as property management offices on both sides have different regulations regarding freight lifts, parking, or permits. Short-term rentals do not guarantee same-day pickup or return; feasibility remains subject to transport availability, items, and site conditions.
6. Keep a list of end and extension dates after confirmation.
Keep the scheduled end date, retrieval method, delivery address, and contact person together for follow-ups as the expiry date approaches. If the destination is still uncertain, enquire about what information is needed to change the address and whether the original moving estimate needs re-assessment.
If an extension is needed, confirm renewal billing and payment before the original arrangement and retain a written record of the new version. Do not assume that not requesting retrieval implies an automatic renewal without conditions, nor that you can switch to another plan after initial storage without being subject to terms.

FAQs
- If I only store for three weeks, will it be billed for 21 days?
- You cannot calculate it this way directly. Different services have minimum rental periods or specific plans; provide actual dates to get a valid quote and clarify billing for early retrieval, expiry, and renewals.
- Central Warehouse has a one-month minimum; does this apply to all box storage?
- No. The one-month minimum is for the Central Warehouse; Door-to-door Box Storage has existing three and six-month plans, and other services must be checked against their own terms—they are not interchangeable.
- If renovation is delayed by one week, can I just pay for one week's rent?
- Confirm the renewal billing unit and available arrangements for the chosen service first; do not assume it will be charged daily or weekly. It is recommended to contact customer service before the original end date and keep written confirmation.
